About

1952 saw the opening of a new Technical College in Hatfield. With its roots in Britain’s pioneering aeronautical industry, the College soon established itself as an innovative force in education. Since then, the University has been at the heart of the community in Hertfordshire.

Achieving its University status in 1992, the University has developed its expertise and reputation in engineering, and throughout the years, it developed multiple research centres of its own in various fields including health and human sciences, arts and humanities, and science and technology to be one of the leading entrepreneurial universities in the United Kingdom, spanning half a century of innovative higher education provision!

We have been awarded Gold in the Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework (TEF), meaning the University is of the highest quality found in the UK. We have been recognised for our strong emphasis on work-based learning, entrepreneurship and enterprise and employability and transferable skills; our culture where curricula are informed by vocationally-informed pedagogy; our high level of investment in physical and digital resources; our extensive widening participation agenda and our commitment to engaging students as partners in teaching and learning.

Hertfordshireis also proud that 79% of their academic staff hold Fellowships of the Higher Education Academy. This is almost twice that of the high education sector average. Hertfordshire’s exceptional lecturers include Dr Theo Gilbert, Associate Professor of Learning and Teaching, who was recognised as the Most Innovative Teacher of the Year at the 2018 Times Higher Education Awards.

The University of Hertfordshire won the Guardian University Award for Student Experience in 2015 with 95% student satisfaction rates.

University of Hertfordshire’s students get a golden opportunity to be linked with industry on variety of interesting and fascinating activities during their exciting and exceptional experience at universities.

Hertfordshire has a Formula Student team that is recognised as one of the most successful Formula Student teams in the UK!

Every British Formula One team has had at least one Hertfordshire graduate working with them!

Hertfordshire holds strong links with the Harry Potter universe! Mike Newell (the Director of Harry Potter: Goblet of Fire) had held a number of lectures for the Film and Television Production students and presented an award that was named after him to Hertfordshire students.

In addition, media students have had the chance to attend masterclasses, film premieres, be mentored and gain work into the industry. Students involved have worked on blockbusters like Wonder Woman and Fantastic Beasts and are forging successful careers. Some students have gone onto win Oscars and BAFTAs with the production companies they went to work for.

The University has invested over £300 million over the past ten years in the campus infrastructure including a £120 million accommodation project, £50 million Science Building, £12 million Enterprise Hub as well as new planned £60 million Engineering and Computer Science on the College Lane campus.
